The Three Basic Rules of Photography

Photography is one of the most innovative sources of communication known to mankind. Looking a photo we can get a sense of emotion and purpose, we interpret a story and understands ones background. The advancement of cameras and rules of photography have caused us to gain more information and feeling about each picture.

Just as important as photography is in our society, so are the rules of Photography. There isn’t really a wrong way of taking a photo but with three basic rules we can enhance the quality of our pictures. Here are the three important steps to take a great photo.

Rules of Thirds

As we look at these two photos above we can see how its not centered directly in the middle. It is divided into three main parts. The rule says that we should put are main focus on the any of the intersecting lines. Placing the focus on these points adds more interest, emotion, and energy throughout the entire piece. If we too, try practicing this rule we also can perhaps produce a different level of emotion and intensity from our pictures.

As we previously seen in the example picture we have the main focuses on the intersecting lines. The body is lined up with the red indicating line causing a little more emotion in the image. We can see whats happening in the photo which creates our minds to build a story and feeling.

Depth of Field

Depth of field is a when one puts the main object focused leaving the rest of the background blurred. This adds more effect by directly guiding us to the main idea of the photo. We don’t get lost, we know the purpose of the image and we know what we need to get from the picture.

In this picture that I’ve taken you can see that the main focus is on my gorgeous baby while the rest of the photo is blurred. You can tell that there are trees and ground behind her but we all know that I didn’t want to emphasize what was happening behind her. I love this rule and think that it makes the picture become less immature and adds a certain quality that makes the picture pop.

Leading Lines

The great thing about leading lines is that they lead to the main focus. We have an easy and creative way to follow the affects in the picture to get to were the photographer was thinking as he took the picture. We can take an effective picture with leading lines when we look for things that lead us and cause a natural line to the person or area where we want them to look.

In the pictures that I took I was working with the fence. I thought it would be interesting to have the logs of the fence to create a line that lead to my best friends daughter. It adds something more to the picture that causes it to be a bit more interesting than just a girl standing on a wooden sidewalk.

Summary

I love photography and how just three simple rules we can add a little more creativity to all of our pictures. They are simple and easy to follow and as long as we are willing to move around in our location and think of leading lines, depth of field and the rule of thirds we can produce interesting photos. If anyone has ever wondered how can we add a little more emotion into one’s photos these are the steps we should follow to finally get a really cool picture.
